What can a student expect when taking one of your classes?

Students attending Marietta College will receive a top quality education in a liberal arts setting that will prepare them for the world of work or further education. The importance of the liberal arts education in today’s world cannot be over estimated. The student can also expect open dialogue with professors and personal attention. Our small classes makes it possible for students to have access to extra help, tutoring and individual time with the professor. This is an important aspect of the college experience at Marietta College.

What excites you about teaching at Marietta College?

I like the opportunity of getting to know the students well because of the small classes. The closeness of the campus fosters connections that are very difficult to find in large universities. I get to know my students well and learn a great deal about them, including their strengths and weaknesses. This helps me to tailor things that will help them work on the weaknesses and become stronger people.

When you aren’t teaching, what other activities do you enjoy?

I like traveling with my wife, playing with my granddaughters, gardening, playing with my dogs and my church activities.

Do you prefer flipping through the pages of a book or an e-book?

I would much prefer a hardcopy book because I like to highlight and make notes in things as I read. It’s more difficult to do that with an e-book. For pleasure reading an e-book is fine.

What is your favorite location on campus and why?

I like my Band Rehearsal Hall because it’s a retreat from stress. My students and I come together to learn about music and collaborate in the process of making music. There is joy and peace in the Band Rehearsal Hall and though our rehearsals are serious and productive we always have fun at the same time.

What is your favorite Marietta College event?

As a fine arts person, my favorite events center around the concerts, theatre productions and the art exhibits on campus. Hermann Fine Arts is filled with creative faculty and students. These are events in Hermann that show the creative aspects of our students and how they put their feelings and emotions into something very personal and moving.
