All international students are required to attend the International Student Orientation (ISO). This orientation takes place one week before freshman orientation. ISO covers many topics including, U.S. educational system, immigration regulation, employment opportunities on campus.

At Marietta College you can speak with the student accounts manager or cashier in the Business Office, Irvine Hall. For information about your personal account, you’ll need the bank name, address, phone number, your account number and a bank routing number. Anyone at the bank will help you.
During Orientation, the Orientation Leaders and Office of International Program staff will escort you to the local bank in order to set up an account. You must speak with the Director of International Programs and/or the Assistant Director of International Programs before opening an account. Some banks require additional letters indicating your status as a student at Marietta College.
- Checking Account: money in the checking account can be used freely. There is no fixed term. You can use the money by writing checks or by using a debit card (see below).
- Savings Account: money cannot be spent freely until transferred into a checking account. Savings accounts usually have a higher interest rate than checking accounts.
- Certificate of Deposit (CD) Account: money that you do not plan to spend in the near future can be deposited into a Certificate of Deposit (CD). CD accounts usually have a higher interest than savings accounts, but require you to sign up for a fixed term contract. During the period of the term, you cannot use the money.
- Checks Drawn on Foreign Banks: If you deposit a check drawn on a foreign bank into your U.S. bank account, it may take several weeks before the money is credited to your account. A faster method: have the money wire-transferred to your U.S. account.
- Debit Cards: Debit cards are issued by your bank and can be used to make payments at locations, which accept credit cards. Unlike credit cards, the money is taken directly out of your checking account.
- Credit Cards: Credit cards allow you to make purchases without cash or checks. You pay the credit card company monthly for "borrowing" the money. You are charged interest for any amount not paid back that month. If you do not pay the bill in full each month you could build up considerable debt. Tip: shop around for cards with the lowest interest rates and stay within your budget.
- Cashing Checks: You may be asked to show some form of Identification when you make a purchase with a check or get cash at your bank from a check. Primary acceptable forms of ID include a passport, U.S. state ID card or a driver's license.

The Marietta College mailroom sells postage stamps and handles every kind of mail service you could need, including international mail, mailing and receiving packages, and express mail such as Federal Express and DHL. The mailroom is centrally located in Gilman Hall.

Each office and residence hall room on campus has a phone number. Each individual in the room also has a personal voicemail box.
On campus, the last four digits of every phone number is called the "extension" and is commonly all that anyone will tell you when you ask for their number. This is because the first six digits for all campus phones are (740) 376- _ _ _ _. An example: the OIP phone number is (740) 376-4708.
If you are on-campus and dialing another number on-campus, you dial only the extension (last four digits), 4708.
If you are in the city of Marietta and want to make a local call to the office, dial 376-4708 (no area code needed).
If you are calling the OIP from outside the city of Marietta, you will dial 1-740-376-4708. If you are on-campus and making a local call off-campus, dial 9 first, and then the rest of the number, example: 9-370-0000.
If you wish to dial long distance from campus or anywhere, you will need to buy a phone card.
There are many web sites you can visit to reserve airline tickets as well as hotels, rental cars, etc. as you travel in the U.S. or internationally.

Marietta College does not provide students with summer storage space. However, there are many storage facilities near campus. The least expensive option for you is to share a storage space with several friends and split the cost.
- Consult the international student advisor. There may be visa regulations that limit the amount of time you can travel abroad.
- Have a DSO sign the travel page of your current I-20 or DS- 2019 (an RO/ARO signs)
- Request a letter of good standing from the international student advisor (optional)
- If you will need to renew your visa at home, request an academic transcript and/or record of registration for the following semester (if returning to Marietta College).
- Consult the Director of International Programs.
- Request an official copy of your academic transcript.
- Close any bank accounts, pay all outstanding bills and cancel all credit cards and other accounts.
- Request a letter of good standing from the Director of International Programs (optional)
- File a change of address with the Marietta College Post Office and U.S. Post Office (if living off-campus), credit card and other companies. Ask about international mailing rates to send packages home.
- Obtain any updated medical or dental records to take home with you.
DSO stands for Designated School Official. A DSO is required to work with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service Office to maintain records of every international student at Marietta College.
The primary DSO you will work with is the Director of International Programs. The following is a list of things you need a DSO's signature:
- Letter of eligibility for Social Security number
- Letter for Bureau of Motor Vehicles
- Curricular Practical Training approval
- Optional Practical Training application process
- Travel signatures on I-20 or DS2019 documents
- Edits to your I-20 including: change of major/minor, change of program end date, change of address
International students at Marietta College must carry health insurance for the duration of their academic program. J-1 visa holders are required by the US Department of State to carry health insurance alternatively, be deemed out of legal status.
The insurance provider will give you an identification card to use as proof of your coverage when you are seeking health care from a hospital or doctor. The company will also provide written instructions for reporting and documenting medical expenses (filing a claim). The company will evaluate any claim that you file, and make the appropriate payment for coverage under your particular policy. In some cases the company pays the hospital or doctor directly; in others the company reimburses the policy-holder after he or she has paid the bills.
Marietta College international students receive insurance service from HTH Worldwide Services. For detailed information about HTH Worldwide Services, visit http://www.hthstudents.com. You can log in with your insurance card ID number and find a doctor in the local area, tips for safety while abroad, and get specific details about your insurance coverage. The free multi-lingual customer service number is 1-800-242-4178.
Your I-20 (legal document) indicates your major and minor. You are required to update any changes you have in your major with the Office of International Programs. Additionally, you must complete the change of major form found in the Registrar’s Office.

All international students in the US are required to file their taxes with the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS), whether you are employed or not. In March, the Office of International Programs holds a tax day to assist with individual questions. All international students must declare the number of days spent in the US (form 8843). Students must mail their taxes through the campus post office before April 15 of each year.
If you move to a new apartment or new room on campus, you must report address change to the Director of International Programs immediately. In order to remain in lawful status, students must report any address changes within 10 days of moving. Failure to report changes, even if on campus, could cause a student to fall out of status.
Yes, you can travel to Canada as a visitor (even on an expired U.S. student visa) provided you return to the U.S. in less than 30 days. Many students travel to Canada during vacation because it is very close.

Tip: If you visit Canada and then leave directly from there to go to your home country, you must surrender your I-94 at the border when you enter Canada. Otherwise, you keep your I-94.
- Consult your academic advisor and the international student advisor before making a final decision.
- Make certain the international student advisor completes the SEVIS release form provided by your new school.
- Complete an exit interview with the Student Life Office, Andrews Hall, (740) 376-4708.
- Consult Student Accounts (Irvine, x4619) and the Records Office (Irvine, x4731) to ensure your account and academic file are in order.
- Leave a forwarding address with the campus mailroom and the international student advisor
- Report your new address to the Director of International Programs.
- Send a copy of your new I-20 to Office of International Programs at Marietta College.
What is . . .
All international students take the ESL placement test during the International Student Orientation. The test consists of reading, writing and listening. The Director of ESL will conduct a 15-minute oral interview with each student.
Plagiarism is a very important topic for international students. In the U.S., students are not expected to work together on assignments unless the professor specifically tells them to work in groups. A student is expected to work alone on exams, homework and papers. A student who copies answers from another student or allows another student to write an assignment or exam for him is guilty of cheating.
In the U.S., it is necessary to give credit (cite) all sources of information in your written work. If a student gets some information from the internet or from a book, he or she must list details of that source in his paper.
If any phrases or sentences are used directly from the source, then there must be quotation marks around those words, and the source must be stated. If a student uses other sources of information and does not identify the source, then it is called plagiarism.
A student may get a failing grade on an assignment or a failing grade in a course if caught cheating or plagiarizing someone else's work. Students have even been expelled from Marietta College for repeated cases of plagiarism.
Tip: Students are encouraged to seek assistance in their academic assignments from the Academic Resource Center (Andrews Hall, 3rd floor) and the campus Writing Center (Thomas Hall, 2nd floor).
One of the College's Seven Core Values embraces the concept of liberal arts education. Students will take a breadth of general education courses in the major areas of knowledge within the ever-changing liberal arts. This approach to teaching and learning stresses the development of critical thinking, problem solving, and effective communication skills.
An academic advisor is a professor who works with you throughout your education at Marietta College . The academic advisor assists the student with registration of classes and other aspects of academic advising. First year students’ academic advisor is typically the instructor of the FYSE (First Year Seminar Experience).
Prior to the third semester, the student is encouraged to select an advisor from their major field of study. Should you wish to change your academic advisor, you must follow the procedures as indicated in the Registrar's Office and the Marietta College Undergraduate Program Catalog (PDF).
Where can I . . .
The Marietta College campus is adjacent to downtown Marietta. Downtown businesses are within walking distance. However, in a nation on wheels, often times, you may find it hard to get to places without a car.
The easiest solution is to hire a taxi or to ask a friend (since most Americans have cars). For a taxi, call (740) 374- TAXI (8294).
There are many places to shop in the Marietta area. Here are some examples:

In Marietta, Kroger and Wal-Mart (see above) have the some international food items. The best option near to campus is the New Market, in Athens, Ohio. There are also many wonderful Asian markets in Columbus and Cleveland.
Many international students are afraid that Americans cannot cut their hair properly and often attempt to cut their own hair. However, there are several hairstylists in Marietta who are skilled at cutting "ethnic hair." For suggestions, visit the OIP or ask students who have been here a while.
The best answer to this question comes from current students. Often, they will have access to discount web sites. Wal-Mart also sells reasonably priced international calling cards.

Tip: Buy phone cards that say "no connection fee." They are more economical.
