About the Chem Club
The Chemistry Club at Marietta College is an academic and social organization for anyone who has an interest in chemistry. We take field trips approximately once a semester to chemical plants like DuPont, or other companies that use chemistry in their work, like the West Virginia State Police Forensics Department. We attend local and regional meetings of the American Chemical Society. We have speakers (local chemists and alumni) that present their real-world experiences in the field of chemistry. In addition, approximately three times a semester we host "pizza presentation days" for the senior capstone students, where we supply the pizza and the seniors give research presentations about current chemical or biochemical topics.
We also offer the opportunity for community service. During National Chemistry Week, we give chemical presentions for students at the Grand Central Mall in Parkersburg, West Virginia. At other times during the year, we perform chemistry-based "magic shows" for the middle school students in the Marietta area. In addition, many of our members are active as lab assistants and/or tutors in the chemistry and biology departments.
Our favorite activities include an annual Holiday party in December, with a potluck dinner, a visit from Santa Claus, and a chance to celebrate the end of the semester. It’s also our chance to get back at the professors by giving them gag gifts and poking fun at them for various mistakes they’ve made that they THINK no one noticed.
At the end of the Spring Semester, we have a picnic to get ready for finals and the last days of school, as well as to recognize the graduating seniors in the department. A softball or volleyball game with the professors and their families is a highlight of this event.
The annual local dues for our chapter are only $5, a small fee compared to other organizations on campus, This fee contributes to the costs of field trips, pizza presentations, and other activities involving outside sources. The remainder of the money necessary to perform club functions is collected through on-campus fundraisers.
If you would like to get even more out of a chem club membership, you can become a National ACS Student Affiliate member for as little as $18.00. You will receive Chemical & Engineering News, In Chemistry (the Student Affiliates magazine), a Directory of Experience opportunities, and Career/Employment Services.
We look forward to meeting you and sharing your enthusiasm in the field of chemistry.
