Reunion Weekend Highlights

Something there still is about the Marietta College Class of 1963 that continues to be very special as alumni of that era returned to alma mater over the weekend of May 31-June 2, 2013, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their graduation.

It began with record-setting pre-registration rendering the annual Spring Reunion event a smashing success and golden memory for all those able to make their way back to campus.

And return they did; from California to Colorado, Maine to Florida and all points in between. In all, more than seventy guests from a number of classes participated in a weekend full of scheduled events and plenty of free time to renew old friendships and connections and re-visit days spent at Marietta during very special times.

For some, like Dale VanVoorhis '63, it was more about the people than the place. "I served on the board for a number of years so I have been back to campus recently and have seen the changes," he said. " I just wanted to see how everyone else has changed over the years." He attended the reunion with his wife, Bonnie.

For still others, it was about the campus and the transformational changes since they last set foot on the Mall, or Fifth Street as a matter of fact!

Elsa Meekins Apetz '63 and her husband Thomas Apetz '63 traveled from Skowhegan, Maine to attend their Golden Reunion. "This is the first time since we graduated that we've returned," Elsa said. "The number of students here is the same but there are far more buildings on campus than when I was a student. I used to be able to look out of Fayerweather and see mostly grass. Now there are so many buildings."

As the weekend came to a close with the traditional class dinner on Saturday night, the class presented to Dr. and Mrs. Bruno their gift to the Marietta Fund. A full 34 percent of the class of 1963 participated in the class gift contribution of $42,142. In thanking everyone for their sharing of time and philanthropy, volunteer Ernie Gazda also expressed very special appreciation to his colleagues on the committee that included John Murphy, Dale Wartluft, Dale Van Voorhis, Bob Nuss and Dick Knapp.

As the evening drew to a close, conversation continued unabated and only reluctantly did members of the Class of '63 finally prepare to bid their close friends and classmates farewell at breakfast on Sunday. The loyalty to Marietta College and their fellow Pioneers remains incredibly strong and a source of great pride for so many.

For Carol McMahon Lord '63 recalling her time on campus accounts for the special feeling of returning so many years later.

Recalls Lord, "Those were the best four years of my life.

She was a biology major and her husband was a social sciences major.
