About Feature 1

Land & Energy Management

Marietta is adding a Land & Energy Management major in the Fall of 2014 and it is distinctive among small liberal arts colleges and large state universities alike. Industry expansion in two geographic regions (Wyoming/North Dakota and Ohio/ Pennsylvania/West Virginia) makes this an attractive major for students wishing to remain in the area or take their talents elsewhere. The major readies students to enter professions involved in land and mineral rights acquisition for fossil fuel and renewable energy resource development.

Complementary minors to this major include Energy Systems Studies and Energy Systems Engineering. Marietta’s curriculum closely follows that suggested by the American Association of Professional Landmen, the premier organization that represents and licenses landmen and land-related professionals. The capstone experience, an internship, integrates academic studies with needed practical skills and competencies. Responsible practices and expert negotiation skills are critical to success in natural gas exploration, drilling, and production, as well as for wind farm, hydroelectric, and solar farm development.

The major’s curriculum builds on the strength of a rigorous business core, then includes disciplines such as geology, environmental science, communications and writing, and mathematics and computing to create a balanced program designed to meet the field’s diverse needs.

A degree in Land & Energy Management prepares graduates for careers with organizations such as:
