Information Systems

Degree: Bachelor of Science in Information Systems

In this new program at Marietta, you’ll learn how to program in high-level computer languages, use object-oriented design principles, master modern software tools, understand hardware components, communicate ideas and project results orally and in written form, and use analytical and technical skills to develop computer solutions to business problems. Marietta’s graduates hold fulfilling career positions as systems analysts, application programmers, database designers/administrators, and information center support personnel.

Required Courses

As a IS major, you'll take courses in:

  • Computer Programming I and II
  • Management Information Systems
  • Systems Analysis and Design
  • Network Infrastructure and Architecture
  • Database Management Systems Design
  • E-Business and E-Commerce System Development
  • Information Systems Security
  • Additional courses are required in Management and Accounting

Additional elective courses include Artificial Intelligence, Database Management Systems Design, Mobile Application Development, Enterprise Information Systems and ERP, Commercial Website Development and Management, and Data Warehousing and Data Mining, among others.


  • A Mutimedia classroom with seating for 32 students
  • A computer classroom with 16 workstations and seating for 30 students
  • A public computer lab/classroom with 9 workstations and seating for 16 students
  • An advanced computer lab used primarily by IS majors for work in their upper level courses. This lab has 6 workstations as well as dedicated Windows and Linux servers.

While at Marietta, you can get valuable hands-on experience by working as a system manager, operator, consultant, or programmer on both academic and administrative computer systems. Marietta College's Institute of Education and Training for Business regularly employs students to assist in computer seminars or as part of a consulting team. Off campus, our students design, develop, and maintain information systems for area employers.

Clubs & Organizations

Marietta sponsors a chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), which is open to any student interested in computers and their applications. ACM hosts national and international student research and programming competitions, and provides you with a network of nearly 75,000 information technology professionals.

Honors Societies and Student Organizations

The Marietta College Student Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery competes annually in the East Central North America Regional Programming Contest (ECNA RPC). Winners of the ECNA RPC and other regional contests held worldwide advance to the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM ICPC) World Finals.
