Advertising & Public Relations

In advertising or public relations, the goal is to be understood in a certain way. It's not about just being clear. It's about delivering a specific message, being persuasive, and presenting your company or your client in the best possible light. At Marietta, you'll learn about the nature of persuasion and acquire the practical skills you need to convince your audience -- everything from desktop publishing to organizational problem solving. But you'll also take courses in media ethics where you'll develop an understanding of the ethical responsibilities that come with the power to move people.

Special Features

With two radio stations, a television station, and an award-winning newspaper on campus and all run by students, Marietta is your opportunity to work in a variety of mass-media markets. The McKinney Mass Media Center features:

WMRT-FM 88.3: a 9,200-watt student-run station, with a range of 30 miles, that broadcasts classical music, jazz, and show tunes, as well as national, regional, state and local news, weather and sports -- including play-by-play of Marietta College sports and student-oriented talk shows.

WCMO-FM 98.5: a 10-watt station that broadcasts contemporary music and local events throughout the campus and within a six-mile radius of the City of Marietta. Nearly all of the programming is live and entirely student-driven.

WCMO-TV (Channel 15): an on-campus TV station that broadcasts student-produced nightly news and programs to 12,000 households. The TV facilities include a large main studio, master control, field production equipment, and Final Cut Pro 3 editing system (similar to the systems used by CNN and ESPN).

The Marcolian: one of the top four small-college newspapers in the country, this weekly newspaper has a circulation of 3,000. Students recently won honorable mention in the Overall Excellence Category in competition sponsored by The Society of Collegiate Journalists

The Mariettana: Marietta's yearbook published by students in Mass Media and Graphic Design and providing students with opportunities in journalism, photography, advertising, and design.

American Advertising Federation: The American Advertising Federation's Marietta College chapter provides numerous programs to guide its students through advertising curriculum and job placement. AAF's programs include the following:

  • Networking with top agency and corporate recruiters

Public Relations Student Society of America: Marietta College's PRSSA Chapter was chartered in 2011 and is part of a network of more than 300 student chapters nationwide.
