Academic Achievement Honors

To recognize academic achievement, the College has also established the following academic honors:


  • Dean's List - Any full-time student completing at least 15 credit hours with a grade point average of 3.500 to 3.749 in a given semester.
  • Dean's High Honors List - Any full-time student completing at least 15 credit hours with a grade point average of 3.750 to 4.000 in a given semester.
  • Phi Beta Kappa - Founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary, Phi Beta Kappa has evolved to become the nation's leading advocate for the liberal arts and sciences at the undergraduate level. It is an honor society of great distinction that recognizes students, usually in their senior year, who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement. Marietta's chapter is the 16th-oldest in the nation.
  • Honor Societies - In addition to Phi Beta Kappa, there are numerous other honorary societies for various academic disciplines.
  • Degrees with Distinction - The student who completes his or her course of study with a high record will be recommended for a degree with distinction. Summa Cum Laude (3.900 - 4.000 cumulative grade point average), Magna Cum Laude (3.750 - 3.899 cumulative grade point average), or Cum Laude (3.500 - 3.749 cumulative grade point average).
  • Jewett Prize - Established by the will of the late Milo Parker Jewett, Professor of Rhetoric in the College from 1835-38 and later the first president of Vassar College, this prize is given annually to two members of the graduating class excellence in oration.
