Marietta College's class of 2011, which is expected to be close to 500 new students, will officially have its summer come to an end on Thursday, Aug. 23, as the College conducts its traditional Matriculation Ceremony at 7 p.m. on Fenton Court in the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center.
This marks the fifth consecutive fall the College has matriculated at least 400 new students. Marietta's Office of Admission expects around 425 of the new students to be first-year students, who will study in one of the 43 majors offered. The College's overall enrollment has increased to more than 1,550, which includes continuing education and graduate programs.
While Matriculation signifies the formal enrollment at the College, orientation activities will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday with academic advising and registration in Andrews Hall, and continue until 10 p.m. Saturday with a Casino Night in the Gathering Place.
New students will start moving into the residence halls from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday. Also on Thursday are mandatory residence hall meetings at 9 p.m. and Hall Welcome Parties at 10 p.m.
On Friday the students have a full schedule of activities, including Harlan Cohen (best-selling author, speaker and syndicated advice columnist) at 10 a.m., a pep rally/tailgate for the football scrimmage at 3:30 p.m. and magician Nate Staniforth at 9 p.m. Saturday's activities include hiking, canoeing, group dynamics and community service projects at 10:30 a.m. and a Meet Marietta session at 6 p.m.
On Monday, Aug. 27, all classes begin for the fall semester. The College conducts a fall break from Oct. 13-16 and celebrates Homecoming from Oct. 17-21. The fall final exams are Dec. 10-14. The spring semester begins Jan. 21.
